First time Trekking?


Usually trekking in Himalayas of Nepal is an extraordinary experience. Some of the most popular routes for trekking are Everest, Annapurna, Langtang and Manasalu. All the trails have tea shops and lodges and the trails between these are well used and in quite good condition.  I have short and easy to long and difficult treks. You can choose your trek according to your time and fitness level.
Usually our trek allows plenty of time to complete the itinerary. To ensure that everyone is in good condition there are acclimatization days in Annapurna Base camp, Everest Base camp and Thorang La pass trek. The climb has no such difficulties and should be within the capabilities of active walker.
Though trekking requires a lot of physical strength but it is not beyond the capabilities of majority of the people. The main thing you should keep in mind is what do you want from trekking; whether you want to see snow capped mountains or walk through the beautiful hamlets bestowed with diverse culture. Another thing you have to keep in mind while trekking is how much do we have and in which time of the year we would like to trek. High passes trek  of 3 weeks to month are often close from December to February due to snowfall but 1 to 2 weeks trek can be easily done. While trekking through the Himalayas of Nepal you will feel like meditating because your whole mind and body will be focused in each and every step. If you are planning to trek through the high pass we advise you to start exercise regularly. Aerobic fitness is the key factor of a comfortable trekking experience.

Tamang heritage trekking in Nepal, This is a superb introduction to trekking in Nepal among some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole country, with rich Tamang culture.
Many years ago Nepal, fought with Tibet for salt and some of the biggest areas where this war took place is in the Langtang Region of Nepal, wherein lies the third most popular trekking trail in Nepal. This area is connected to Tibet and the trails in this region were used by traders from Tibet bartering in Salt and mountain goats for meat (changra) with foodstuffs from the south.
Developed by the Tourism for Rural Poverty Alleviation Program, the "Tamang Heritage Trail" is the newly developed tourism product, off the beaten track, which highlights an ancient lifestyle combining it with picturesque scenery and healing baths in natural hot springs.
The people of this region are mostly Tibetans who came from Kerung in Tibet across the border and settled in Nepal. In earlier days, the citizenship of Nepal would not be offered to real Tibetans, so they changed their ethnicity to Tamang, which is what they still write till date. The cultural and traditions of these people are similar to the Tibetan across the border.
This trekking destination is just a day long bus journey from the capital, Kathmandu. The 13-day trekking tour provides varieties of experience. Tamang rituals, Tibetan culture, festivals, traditional architecture, costumes, local Syabru dances make the exposure to this culture very unique. There is a view point at Goljung Pass, from where views of Langtang and Kerung (Tibet) can be awe inspiring. Visitors will get an opportunity to observe Syabru, Mane and other local dances at Goljung and Gatlang VDCs. The villages also sell exclusive handicraft items like traditional caps, mufflers and other items.
Tourists can enjoy hot bath in the healing hot-water spring at Tatopani before reaching Nagthali, where the stay is a unique experience. The ancient monasteries and houses adorned with rich wood engravings at Thuman is an unforgettable experience.
At Briddim one gets to experience the famous Tamang hospitality, where there is home stay facility in 24 houses. After the Tamang heritage trail we will head towards the Langtang.Langtang is a narrow valley situated 75 kms north of Kathmandu close to the Tibetan border.Last but not the least combining the Tamang heritage trails with the Langtang would be one of the best trails in Nepal like the Annapurna circuit or the Everest Base Camp.

 Upper mustang trekking in Nepal Mustang is an ancient  Himalayan Kingdom which lies in the northern central part of Nepal and at the  top of the Kali Gandaki River. Upper Mustang consists of two distinct regions:  the southern part and the northern where the languages, culture and traditions  are alike to those of the Tibetan people. This area is consider as one of the  most interesting and picturesque places in Nepal. The whole area has an isolated  and mystical feel to it, enchanting and inspiring visitors to this  region.

The trek to Lo- Manthang is through high altitude desert country  climbing in and out of the huge sided valley of the Kali Gandaki. In places the  gorgewhich the Kali Gandaki River runs through is the deepest in the world.   This region is full of some of Nepal’s oldest Buddhist Monasteries, ancient and   isolated villages with quaint white washed houses.

Trekking Itinerary:

Day 1: Kagbeni – Chele: 7 hours 2800 m - 3050 m 18 km.
Today we climbs quite steeply up into a jumble gullies and small towers, zigzagging to a viewpoint over Kagbeni with Nilgiri providing a dazzling white fluted back drop from the Kagbeni checkpost. The trail keeps to the east bank of Kali Gandaki River, climbing and descending. We lunch at Tange village the first village from Kagbeni to meet about 4 hours walk. It is also the Mongolian village where the all villagers are mixture of Gurung, Thakali and some families from the land of Lo. From Tanbe the trail again climbs to a high point around 3100 m. The trail then drops steeply and undulates along the east bank of Kali Gandaki for 1 ½ hours to the village of Chhuksang, from Chhuksang we can see the Chele. After a short walk along the river bank, there is a solid bridge across the Kali Gandaki at the point where it tunnels. Its way under a vast block of red sandstone, from here it is a short sharp climb to Chele 3 hours walk after lunch.


Day 2: Chele – Syanbochen 6 hours 3050m - 3820 m.
The path climbs steeply up to a plateau region through a small tunnel like gully, climbing more. Gradually, the village of Ghyakar appears to the west as the path rounds a corner. The view South offers a panorama of Nilgiri, Tilicho peak and Yakawa Kang. The peak that dominates the Thorongla Pass on the Annapurna circuit. To the far-east the range of the Damodar Danda show peaks is visible. From the pass it is a short descent to Samar, a pleasant settlement in a grove of willows with good running water in irrigation channels. We get Samar village after 3 hours from Chele . It is the lunch place. After leaving Samar the trails dives steeply for about 70 m into a deep side canyon. Inevitably it is a short steep climb out and after a brief respite it dives again into another side canyon. This second climb is steeper and longer. After about 2 hours walk from Samar, the trail reaches 3750 m and descends slightly to the first tea house. The second tea houses can be seen in the distance is called 
Eklo Bhatte, but once more the trails dives into another steep canyon and it will take a further hour to reach it. The trail climbs gently to a small pass at 3870m with views directly below into deep eroded canyons; which is one of the beautiful cave monasteries. About 1 1/4 hours from camp, is the tea shop of Syangmochen,. This place is known as Syanbochen . This is our camping place.

Day 3:Syanbochen – Ghami 6 hours 3520m.
 After gentle climb levels out to a Chorten (3700m. 2 hours) and the first view of Gelling villages below (3500m). From here the path descends gradually into another less severe qully and climbs out to a collection of houses for lunch after 2 1/2 hours. Geling would be a good camping spot, with a monastery, Chorten and fairly extensive flat fields. From the lunch spot the trail continues round above Gelling and starts the long climb to the Nyi pass at 3950m. A long descent, out of the wind, takes us down more steeply to Ghami 3520m. 11/2 hours from lunch.


Day 4: Ghami – Tsarang 6 hours 3520 m3500m 11 km.
From the Gompa in Ghami two tracks level down into a gully east of the village, one steeply past a trio of red, black and white Chortens that are a common sight in upper Mustang. At the bottom of the qully are two bridges across the river, there is a direct path to this point not visiting Ghami. The trail climbs onto a gently sloping plateau and passes beside a very long mani wall, about 1/2 hour, from Ghami , from the end of the wall, the trail heads east away from a very dramatic red eroded canyon wall towering above the village of Tramar in the distance, climbing steadily an altitude of 3770m is reached after about 2 hours from Ghami. The descent to Tsarang is mostly gentle and completed in a further 2 hours.


Day 5: Tsarang – Lo-Manthang 5 hours 3500 m - 3700m. 13 km.
The trail leaves Tsarang to the northwest and once clears of the village drops steeply into the Tsarang Chu canyon. After crossing the river, the route is initially very steep up a stony trach. As we round the corner and heads north , a fine view of the great white Himalayan peaks of Nilgiri, Tilicho and Annapurna I behind Brikuti peak is visible to the south east, the trail climbs gently along the west side of a side valley to an isolated chorten at 3620 m. 2 hours from Tsarang. A further hour takes us to 3700 m with some spectacular caves high up in the cliffs to the east. Having climbed to around 3850 m. a pass is reached and through a narrow ‘window ‘at the Summit the view ahead opens out to display the western valley of Lo-Manthang. The bright red and grey monastery of Namgyal sits on top of a pro monastery, with the wide valley surrounding Tingkar (the site of the King’s Summer palace) and Phewa villages behind Just down from the pass is the first dramatic view of the walled city of Lo-Manthang and the ancient ruined forts on the chills behind. There is a tremendous view to the east of the red, blue, grey, white and yellow eroded Mustang Khola canyon, to the north lie the flattish red colored hills and the Tibetan border. The western view is dominated by the snow-capped peak of ‘Manaslu‘. The descent to Lo-Manthang is short and after crossing the small river and climbing briefly the fabled city is finally reached.


Day 6: Acclimatization

Day 7: Lomanthang and eastern valleys, Nyphu, Ghaphu 5-6 hours round trip.

Day 8: Lomanthang and western valley, Namgyal, Tingkar 4 - 5 hours, round trip.
It takes around 2 hours to reach Namgyal Gompa which is situated at the hilltop serves as an important monastery of the local community and as local court. After visiting Namgyal gompa continues the tour to Tingkar, which is the village of around 400 houses, the laste main village to the north-west of Lo-Manthang.


Day 9: Lo-Manthang – Surkhang (3670m) / Yara Gang (Village) 4-5 hours.
From Lo-Manthang, the trail walks straight till Dhi pass (4100m) and descend down to Dhi village. Dhi village is one of the best village of Lo-Manthang regions. It seems more prospectuses and it is settled in a very suitable place. From then, the trail goes through river around 2 hours then reaches Surkhang.


Day 10: Surkhang - Lori Gumba (Monastery) – Yara Gang / 4-5 hours (4000m) and back to Surkhang.

Day 11: Surkhang – Tange Height - 3500 - 3240 m Time - 4 hours Distance - 10 km.
From Surkhang, we need to cross a river from Damodar Kunda one the sacred lake. There is no bridge on the Ghechang River, so we need to walk across the river in bare feet to cross this river. After crossing the river, the trail climbs up till high above a pass of 3850m, the trails goes through grasslands, treeless bare hill. After the pass the trail drops directly to Tange village at an elevation of 3240m. Tange is small village with around 30 houses but most of the houses are attached each other. On the roofs, one can see the piles of dry woods, which also reflect the prosperity in their society.


Day 12: Tange – Tetang Height - 3240 - 2940 m Time - 30 hours Distance - 10 km.
The trail walk through the deep ridge of hill providing the fine views of wind carved hills. Tetang village is formed between 2 hills as they should have found it as a safe place to avoid strong wind that hit the entire Kail Gandaki valley. Tetang is the upper village of Chuksang.


Day 13: Tetang –Kagbeni
Day 14: take the jeep to jomsom and again next transport to Tatopani(hotspring) or flight to pokhara
Day 15: From tatopani to pokhara by bus.

High Altitude sickness

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
Some people are more susceptible to altitude sickness than others. If you suffer from a case of altitude sickness it does not mean that you can never go to high altitudes again. However, it does mean in the future, you should pay attention. Awareness of altitude sickness has caused some trekkers to be unnecessarily anxious as they trek. The progression of symptoms is usually gradual, and you will have plenty of time to react appropriately. Design your itineraries to allow plenty of time for acclimatization so that you will be able to adjust to the increase in altitude. Human bodies have the ability to adjust to higher altitudes when given enough time. If a person travels up to high altitudes more rapidly than his or her body is able to adjust, AMS symptoms develop.
The treatments of AMS are first and foremost not to ascend with symptoms and if symptoms are severe, to descend. In rare cases where the descent is difficult or impossible a portable pressure chamber is effective. Three medications have also been proven useful for treating and preventing AMS: Acetazolamide (Diamox), Dexamethasone (Decadron), Nifedipine. Your physician and local Public Health Service are the best sources for further information.
Altitude sickness—also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), altitude illness, hypobaropathy, or soroche—is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude. It commonly occurs above 2,400 metres (8,000 feet)   It presents as a collection of nonspecific symptoms, acquired at high altitude or in low air pressure, resembling a case of "flu, carbon monoxide poisoning, or a hangover". It is hard to determine who will be affected by altitude sickness, as there are no specific factors that correlate with a susceptibility to altitude sickness. However, most people can ascend to 2,400 meters (8,000 ft) without difficulty.
Acute mountain sickness can progress to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE), which is potentially fatal.
Chronic mountain sickness, also known as Monge's disease, is a different condition that only occurs after very prolonged exposure to high altitude.
Causes
The percentage of oxygen in air, at 21%, remains almost unchanged up to 70,000 feet (21,000 m). The RMS velocities of diatomic nitrogen and oxygen are very similar and thus no change occurs in the ratio of oxygen to nitrogen. However, it is the air density itself, the number of molecules (of both oxygen and nitrogen) per given level, which drops as altitude increases. Consequently, the available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases above 10,000 feet (3,000 m). Although the cabin altitude in modern passenger aircraft is kept to 8,000 feet (2,400 m) or lower, some passengers on long-haul flights may experience some symptoms of altitude sickness.
Dehydration due to the higher rate of water vapor lost from the lungs at higher altitudes may contribute to the symptoms of altitude sickness.
The rate of ascent, altitudes attained, amount of physical activity at high altitude, as well as individual susceptibility, are contributing factors to the onset and severity of high-altitude illness.
Altitude sickness usually occurs following a rapid ascent and can usually be prevented by ascending slowly. In most of these cases, the symptoms are temporary and usually abate as altitude acclimatisation occurs. However, in extreme cases, altitude sickness can be fatal.
Signs and symptoms
Primary symptoms
Headaches are the primary symptom used to diagnose altitude sickness, although a headache is also a symptom of dehydration. A headache occurring at an altitude above 2,400 metres (8,000 feet = 76 kPa), combined with any one or more of the following symptoms, may indicate altitude sickness:
  • Lack of appetite, nausea, or vomiting
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Insomnia
  • Pins and needles
  • Shortness of breath upon exertion
  • Nosebleed
  • Persistent rapid pulse
  • Drowsiness
  • General malaise
  • Peripheral edema (swelling of hands, feet, and face).
  • Severe symptoms
  • Symptoms that may indicate life-threatening altitude sickness include:
  • Pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs)
  • Symptoms similar to bronchitis
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath even when resting
  • Cerebral edema (swelling of the brain)
  • Headache that does not respond to analgesics
  • Unsteady gait
  • Gradual loss of consciousness
  • Increased nausea
  • Retinal hemorrhage
The most serious symptoms of altitude sickness arise from edema (fluid accumulation in the tissues of the body). At very high altitude, humans can get either high altitude pulmonary edema(HAPE), or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The physiological cause of altitude-induced edema is not conclusively established. It is currently believed, however, that HACE is caused by local vasodilation of cerebral blood vessels in response to hypoxia, resulting in greater blood flow and, consequently, greater capillary pressures. On the other hand, HAPE may be due to general vasoconstriction in the pulmonary circulation (normally a response to regional ventilation-perfusion mismatches) which, with constant or increased cardiac output, also leads to increases in capillary pressures. For those suffering HACE, dexamethasone may provide temporary relief from symptoms in order to keep descending under their own power.
HAPE can progress rapidly and is often fatal. Symptoms include fatigue, severe dyspnea at rest, and cough that is initially dry but may progress to produce pink, frothy sputum. Descent to lower altitudes alleviates the symptoms of HAPE.
HACE is a life threatening condition that can lead to coma or death. Symptoms include headache, fatigue, visual impairment, bladder dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, loss of coordination, paralysis on one side of the body, and confusion. Descent to lower altitudes may save those afflicted with HACE.
Prevention
Ascending slowly is the best way to avoid altitude sickness.  Avoiding strenuous activity such as skiing, hiking, etc. in the first 24 hours at high altitude reduces the symptoms of AMS. As alcohol tends to cause dehydration, which exacerbates AMS, avoiding alcohol consumption in the first 24-hours at a higher altitude is optimal.
Altitude acclimatization
Altitude acclimatization is the process of adjusting to decreasing oxygen levels at higher elevations, in order to avoid altitude sickness. Once above approximately 3,000 metres (10,000 feet = 70 kPa), most climbers and high-altitude trekkers take the "climb-high, sleep-low" approach. For high-altitude climbers, a typical acclimatization regimen might be to stay a few days at a base camp, climb up to a higher camp (slowly), and then return to base camp. A subsequent climb to the higher camp then includes an overnight stay. This process is then repeated a few times, each time extending the time spent at higher altitudes to let the body adjust to the oxygen level there, a process that involves the production of additional red blood cells. Once the climber has acclimatised to a given altitude, the process is repeated with camps placed at progressively higher elevations. The general rule of thumb is to not ascend more than 300 meters (1,000 ft) per day to sleep. That is, one can climb from 3,000 (10,000 feet = 70 kPa) to 4,500 meters (15,000 feet = 58 kPa) in one day, but one should then descend back to 3,300 meters (11,000 feet = 67.5 kPa) to sleep. This process cannot safely be rushed, and this is why climbers need to spend days (or even weeks at times) acclimatizing before attempting to climb a high peak. Simulated altitude equipment that produces hypoxic (reduced oxygen) air can be used to acclimate to high altitude, reducing the total time required on the mountain itself
Altitude acclimatization is necessary for some people who move rapidly from lower altitudes to intermediate altitudes (e.g., by aircraft and ground transportation over a few hours), such as from sea level to 8,000 feet (2,400 m) as in many Colorado, USA mountain resorts. Stopping at an intermediate altitude overnight can alleviate or eliminate occurrences of AMS.
Medical treatment
The drug acetazolamide may help some people making a rapid ascent to sleeping altitude above 2,700 metres (9,000 ft), and it may also be effective if started early in the course of AMS. TheEverest Base Camp Medical Centre cautions against its routine use as a substitute for a reasonable ascent schedule, except where rapid ascent is forced by flying into high altitude locations or due to terrain considerations. The Centre suggests a dosage of 125–250 mg twice daily for prophylaxis, starting from 24 hours before ascending until a few days at the highest altitude or on descending;] with 250 mg twice daily recommended for treatment of AMS. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests a lower dose for prevention of 125 mg acetazolamide every 12 hours. An undesirable side-effect of acetazolamide is a reduction in aerobic endurance performance. Dosage of 1000 mg/day will produce a 25% decrease in performance, on top of the reduction due to high-altitude exposure. The CDC advises that Dexamethasone be reserved for treatment of AMS and HACE during descents, and notes that Nifedipine may prevent HAPE.
A single randomized controlled trial found that sumatriptan may help prevent altitude sickness. Despite their popularity, antioxidant treatments have not been found to be effective medications for prevention of AMS. Interest in phosphodiesterase inhibitors such as sildenafil has been limited by the possibility that these drugs might worsen the headache of mountain sickness.
A promising possible preventative treatment for altitude sickness is myo-inositol trispyrophosphate (ITPP), which increases the amount of oxygen released by hemoglobin.
For centuries, indigenous peoples of the Americas such as the Aymaras of the Altiplano, have chewed coca leaves to try to alleviate the symptoms of mild altitude sickness. In Chinese and Tibetan traditional medicine, extract of root tissue of Radix rhodiola is often taken in order to prevent the same symptoms.
Oxygen enrichment
In high-altitude conditions, oxygen enrichment can counteract the hypoxia related effects of altitude sickness. A small amount of supplemental oxygen reduces the equivalent altitude in climate-controlled rooms. At 3,400 meters (11,155 feet = 67 kPa), raising the oxygen concentration level by 5 percent via an oxygen concentrator and an existing ventilation system provides an effective altitude of 3,000 metres (10,000 feet = 70 kPa), which is more tolerable for surface-dwellers.
Other methods
Increased water intake may also help in acclimatisation to replace the fluids lost through heavier breathing in the thin, dry air found at altitude, although consuming excessive quantities ("over-hydration") has no benefits and may cause dangerous hyponatremia.
Oxygen from gas bottles or liquid containers can be applied directly via a nasal cannula or mask. Oxygen concentrators based upon pressure swing adsorption (PSA), VSA, or vacuum-pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) can be used to generate the oxygen if electricity is available. Stationary oxygen concentrators typically use PSA technology, which has performance degradations at the lower barometric pressures at high altitudes. One way to compensate for the performance degradation is to utilize a concentrator with more flow capacity. There are also portable oxygen concentrators that can be used on vehicular DC power or on internal batteries, and at least one system commercially available measures and compensates for the altitude effect on its performance up to 4,000 meters (13,000 ft). The application of high-purity oxygen from one of these methods increases the partial pressure of oxygen by raising the FiO2 (fraction of inspired oxygen).
Also, the use of Nitric Oxide has been proven to address and relieve altitude sickness. 12 scientists recently released a study in which Mount Everest trekkers were allowed to naturally adapt to altitude during their ascent. They were tested for nitric oxide levels along the way. The scientists found that their bodies naturally produced more nitric oxide as they climbed higher. "Our results suggest that nitric oxide is an integral part of the human physiological response to hypoxia." Scientific Reports
Treatment
The only reliable treatment and in many cases the only option available is to descend. Attempts to treat or stabilise the patient in situ at altitude is dangerous unless highly controlled and with good medical facilities. However, the following treatments have been used when the patient's location and circumstances permit:
Oxygen may be used for mild to moderate AMS below 12,000 feet (3,700 m) and is commonly provided by physicians at mountain resorts. Symptoms abate in 12–36 hours without the need to descend.
For more serious cases of AMS, or where rapid descent is impractical, a Gamow bag, a portable plastic hyperbaric chamber inflated with a foot pump, can be used to reduce the effective altitude by as much as 1,500 meters (5,000 ft). A Gamow bag is generally used only as an aid to evacuate severe AMS patients, not to treat them at altitude.

Other treatments include injectable steroids to reduce pulmonary edema, this may buy time to descend but treats a symptom, it does not treat the underlying AMS.
